Many districts are tasked to craft a return to operations plan for the upcoming school year. That raises a number of logistical concerns. Adequate social distancing is possibly foremost amongst them. Many have proposed using an alternate day schedule whereby 50% of the students report to the physical plant on a given day. Using 6 feet as the universally accepted barometer for appropriate distancing, simple math reveals that a line of even 100 students waiting for entry at the start of a school day would stretch the length of two football fields. Add a bit of inclement weather, the report times of staff and faculty, and presumably a single entry system with a temperature check for each individual and it doesn't take a degree in urban planning to see the problem.
Staggering student arrival times could help mitigate the problem. In some communities, parents would be better positioned to observe that condition. In others, where parents may be more compelled to be at work early, that luxury would pose a dilemma.
